Energy Efficiency
Tips

LED light bulbs are a great way to save money on your electricity bill. They use up to 75% less energy than old, incandescent bulbs.

*****

Save energy by preventing phantom loads - energy that is used by appliances and electronics even when they are turned off. Plug TV and stereo systems into a power strip and turn off all the peripherals with the flip of one switch.

ELECTRIC METERS

METER READING

At GCEA approximately 98% of our meters are read by an automated process. Currently, GCEA utilizes two different automated meter reading (AMR) systems to collect information for billing.

The "Turtle System" by Hunt Technologies has been in use since 2001 and is presently in the Lake City, Gunnison, Almont and Crested Butte South service areas. The "Twacs System" by Aclara has been in use since 2004 and is used in the Mt. Crested Butte, Crested Butte, Crested Butte South and Almont service areas. The Twacs system is capable of providing "real time" readings; and both AMR systems have proven to be accurate and reliable. They each provide daily meter reading information.

Collecting meter reads from our automated systems has allowed GCEA to greatly reduce both labor and transportation costs. Although reading meters is now an automated process, GCEA still schedules to physically read and inspect your electric meter on a yearly basis. This process enhances system reliability and safety.

In the event GCEA is unable to collect a reading from this automated process, a member of GCEA will be dispatched to physically read your electric meter. If, for any reason GCEA is unable to read your meter, your usage will be estimated based on past consumption. Any difference between this estimated reading and your actual usage will be adjusted the next time your meter is read.
